 Staghorn Fern Platycerium hillii

Platycerum hilli is native to Queensland Australia. The basal or shield fronds are generally round or kidney shaped and light green in color. These will dry and form the ball or base of the plant. The fertile ferns are a dark green grey on top and whitish underside. The plant you will receive is similar to plants in the photo.
Large size determined more by basal leaf being around 5 - 6", fertile leaves about 8 - 10". Medium size determined by basal leaf being around 4", fertile leaves about 6- 8".

Staghorn Ferns are epiphytes found from Southeast Asia, Australia, South America to Africa. They grow on tree trunks and branches so do well mounted on boards, placed in wire or wood slat baskets or hung just with rope to form ball.  (AKA Elkhorn Fern) Plants have two distinct leaves, a basal and a foliar or fertile frond. The basal are round overlapping layers that hold plant onto a surface. Basal leaves grow out tight on top of prior leaf that make up what becomes ball like structure forming and growing ball. Leaves will turn brown and next new green leaf will grow and cover the older one. The fertile leaves either erect or pendant, grow upward out from ball and hang down giving appearance of antlers. These leaves will produce sporangia the fern's spores on the underside. The fertile leaves, antlers, at some point will yellow and fall off as new leaves grow.

I am a Fl. Dept. of Agriculture Certified Grower since 2008, plants are inspected. My handling time (5 or 10 business days) allows for shipping most items at beginning of week, weather conditions, the pulling plants from stock including offsite greenhouse which I visit usually only once a week. Plants are prepared for shipping which includes for most a day of hydrating followed by a day to allow plants to dry. Plants like Tillandsia and Vanda orchids need to be completely dry prior to boxing. Shipping damp in a warm dark place increases chance for fungus to develop. Recommend you always do preventative treatment on any plant shipped and then water thoroughly to re-hydrate.

See care information from Mad Happenings and contact as soon as any concerns appear,

waiting to see how plant does will not help.
